Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) was the 11thNumber House Democrats have publicly called on Biden to withdraw from the election and said the president’s press conference Thursday evening would not change his mind.
Schneider sat down with CNN’s Caitlin Collins after Biden’s press conference and said he thought the president “did a great job.”
“He was well-versed in domestic and international issues,” the Illinois congressman said, noting that he stood in “a stark contrast” to former President Trump when it came to international policy.
“But as I said, the fact is we can’t be in a situation where we’re holding our breath every day, whether it’s a press conference or a debate or a rally,” Schneider said.
Schneider joined several other House Democrats in calling on Biden to step down and nominate someone else as the party’s nominee early Thursday.
He said he appreciates Biden’s leadership and service but believes there is too much at stake in this election.
Schneider was one of several House Democrats who publicly criticized President Biden on Thursday, just two weeks after Biden’s poor debate performance sparked widespread panic among Democrats about his ability to win the election and serve another four years in office.
“I think we’re in a historic moment where the president can hand the baton to the next generation and bring not just the Democratic Party but the country together,” he said Thursday after Biden’s interview.
“Instead of sprinting to the finish line at the end of the November election, we can run all the way to the end, win with a strong majority, and continue this great experiment that we’ve been working on for 248 years,” Schneider continued.
Schneider, like other Democrats who have called for the president to step down, said Biden would go down in history as one of the greatest presidents the country has ever had.
“he [the] “This is the culmination of an incredible career and an opportunity to finish as one of the greatest presidents in the history of our nation,” Schneider said.
“If he passes the baton and is successful, [as a] “It’s not a George Washington, Abraham Lincoln or Frankling Roosevelt hall of fame historical figure,” he continued.
