College football announcer says Big 12 will have a ‘banner year’ as more realignment could be in works

Starting July 1, college athletic conferences will look very different.

The Big 12 alone added four schools: Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.

This is only year one of a new era for college sports, and further restructuring is likely on the horizon.

There have been rumors circulating that both Florida State and Clemson could opt to leave the ACC and join the Big 12.

The speculation led Fox Sports college football announcer Tim Brand to say that’s why Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has “worked hard to bring in additional revenue.”

“That’s why everything from private equity to the sale of conference naming rights is designed to increase profits in order to make a big financial dent. [Clemson and Florida State]”That’s what they want. They want the money like the Big Ten and the SEC …” Brand said Thursday on Outkick’s “Hot Mic.”

“They have a wealthy group behind them, and they’re really stepping up the pressure and telling their guys, ‘We’ve got to find a way to get out of here somehow.’ I think Brett Yormark could offer them a little better terms if he can pull off some of the PR tactics that he has in mind… But they also have lawsuits they have to overcome, and that’s going to take time.”

Brand also predicted the Big 12 Conference will have its “best year yet,” which could “add fuel” to the discussion.

“Top to bottom, bottom to top, it’s going to be the most competitive league in America. The way the schedule is laid out this year, I think it’s very possible that there will be multiple teams that are 11-1, 10-2, etc., and that would be great. … I think the top end would be really good. I have very high hopes for the Big 12 this year,” Brand said. “And financially, if we can turn things around for Florida State and Clemson, it might force not just the ACC, but the rest of the ACC, to think about working together to make ends meet.”
