Some GOP Reaction to Trump Shooting ‘Will Raise Further Concern’ of Violence

On Saturday, Margaret Brennan, CBS chief foreign affairs correspondent and host of “Face the Nation,” said the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, a Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, had been met with a “very angry” reaction from some Republicans, “raising concerns that someone might misinterpret it and use it to commit further political violence.”

“I was just texting with Robert O’Brien, former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, who said in a statement, ‘We must de-escalate the political tensions,'” Brennan said. “…So we have two Republican Trump supporters calling for a de-escalation of the rhetoric, the political violence and the threats of it. This is in stark contrast to the statement you just read from top Trump campaign officials. We’re also looking at social media posts from other Republicans who are very angry. Everyone should be angry that a security failure occurred, but they’re angry in a way that raises concerns that someone may get it wrong and commit further political violence. Law enforcement will want to de-escalate the tensions and words matter very much right now.”
