Former Presidents Trump and Biden appeared to convey similar messages on Sunday.
Just minutes after Biden finished speaking about the assassination attempt on Trump the previous day, Trump posted to his Truth social account, “Let’s Unite America!”
A gunman fired shots into a Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. The former president reported that one bullet pierced his ear but was otherwise unharmed. The gunman, identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, targeted the rally from a nearby rooftop.
In his speech on Sunday, Biden said he was launching an independent investigation into the security services and reiterated his condemnation of the assassination attempt.
“This is not like our country. This is not like America. We cannot allow this to happen,” he said.
At 2:11 p.m., three minutes after his remarks, the former president posted a message of solidarity on Truth Social, following a similar statement he had made just hours earlier.
“Now more than ever it is important that we come together, show our true character as Americans, stand strong and determined and do not let evil win,” Trump said. I have written“I love this country with all my heart. And I love you all. And I look forward to speaking to this great nation from Wisconsin this week.”
After considering postponing his trip, President Trump announced on Truth Social at 2:09 p.m. that he would leave for Milwaukee as scheduled to attend the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to begin on Monday.
