Jones was 40 years old at the time of his death.

The cause of Jones’ death was not immediately clear.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jacoby Jones. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time,” the Houston Texans wrote on social media platform X.

In a statement released through the NFL Players Association on Sunday, Jones’ family said he died “peacefully” at his home in New Orleans.

“The family, including his mother Emily and son Little Jacoby, remain together and ask for prayers, privacy and support as they navigate this difficult time.”

“Jacoby had the unique ability to connect with everyone he met. His charisma, joy and love were one of a kind and could light up any room and brighten any dark day,” the Ravens said in a statement Sunday.

Jones, a New Orleans native, was selected by the Texans in the third round of the 2007 draft.

The eight-year veteran played five seasons with the Texans before signing with Baltimore and helping the team win the Super Bowl in 2013 against the San Francisco 49ers.

In the 34-31 Super Bowl victory, Jones scored two touchdowns on a 56-yard pass from quarterback Joe Flacco and a 108-yard kickoff return.

“I loved Jacoby Jones. We all did,” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. “His spirit, enthusiasm and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was a precious son to a loving mother, Emily. They were very close. He was a man of faith.”

according to Korea PRC Jones, of Houston, died overnight in his sleep.

“My favorite football play was right before the kickoff return late in the game against the Vikings in the snowstorm shootout, Jacoby was in the end zone talking to his mom. Jacoby then caught the ball and ran it back for a touchdown,” Harbaugh said.

During his Super Bowl appearances, Jones also caught what has been dubbed the “Mile High Miracle” – a 70-yard touchdown pass that tied the game with under a minute left in a 2012 AFC Divisional Playoff game against the Denver Broncos, which the Ravens won, 38-35.

Ravens teammate and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis expressed sadness and disappointment over Jones’ death.

“You will truly be missed, brother. All the memories and hard work on and off the football field will be remembered. You were always giving back and being a pillar of your community,” Lewis wrote to X, adding, “Love you, JJ.”

Jones finished his career with 2,733 yards and 14 touchdowns.
