Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) Booed Trump drew condemnation from party members on Monday when he pledged to send Kentucky’s delegates to former President Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
There were scattered boos and cheers as the Senate Minority Leader addressed the crowd, but the boos appeared to overwhelm the cheers.
“Mr. Speaker, Kentucky is proud to cast its 46 votes for the next President of the United States, Donald J. Trump,” McConnell said.
He announced in February that he would step down as the Senate Republican leader after the November election, ending a more than 15-year career in conference leadership, but the 82-year-old made clear he has no plans to step down from his senate seat when his term ends in January 2027.
Senator McConnell has been at odds with President Trump for years, especially since the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Last year, he took a stance in support of arms sales to Ukraine, something President Trump has largely opposed.
Trump was formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate on Monday, with Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) named as his running mate.
