Skorts are back, thanks to Zendaya and Taylor Swift — and even men are embracing them: ‘It took off’

Who is wearing a short skort?

The word skort is a combination of the words “skirt” and “short,” and reached its peak in the mid-1990s, when it was worn primarily by young women and tennis players.

Currently, skorts are experiencing a renaissance and everyone, including men, is wearing them to look their best.

Traditionally feminine garments were all over the Men’s Fall 2024 runways, with luxury menswear designers including Comme des Garçons, Fendi and Louis Vuitton showing skirted trousers in their collections.

“I think skorts have lost their radical meaning on the runway,” says industry analyst Alexandra Hildreth. He told Hypebeast“What was once a statement about subverting gender norms has become practically the norm itself, even if the real world in which men wear skorts remains largely invisible beyond a small, ever-online, hipster community.”

The “tennis scores” craze began to go mainstream late last year as everyone focused on the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, coinciding with other Internet interests like quiet luxury and old money.

But pop culture has brought skirts to the forefront. Google Search Over the past two decades, interest in thighs has reached an all-time high, and Zendaya and Taylor Swift may be the reason we don’t have to endure thigh chafing.

In addition to being influenced by the world’s biggest stars, skorts are just so comfortable.

“Skorts became popular because people said, ‘I want one. They’re comfortable and easy to wear,'” says Deirdre Clemente, a fashion historian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As he explained to Vox.

“The skort fills a need for the woman who wears it,” Clemente added. “If it’s comfortable, practical, and easy to wash, it’s a staple of the American wardrobe.”
