MILWAUKEE — Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina delivered an emotional speech on the first night of the Republican National Convention, focusing on how God saved former President Trump during Saturday’s assassination attempt.
“Our God still saves, delivers and liberates, because on Saturday the devil came to Pennsylvania with a rifle in his hand,” Scott said, “but the American Lion rose up and roared.”
Trump feared for his life after a gunman attacked the 45th president at a rally on Saturday. Butler, PennsylvaniaBefore being removed on Saturday evening, Trump pumped his fist in the air and yelled “Fight!” to the crowd to show he was OK.
Trump suddenly clutched his right ear, crouched, and collapsed to the stage floor. Secret Service agents quickly surrounded Trump and escorted him off the stage, his right ear covered in blood. One rally attendee, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, was killed in the assassination attempt. Comperatore was a former volunteer fire chief who died trying to protect his family.

The man who was shot and killed by Secret Service agents was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Pennsylvania. A motive has not yet been released.

“If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you should believe in them now,” he added.

During his speech, the senator also took issue with President Biden, saying he was “asleep at the wheel.”

“America, these are hard times for our nation. Inflation is crushing families. Illegal immigration is crushing the American worker. Failing schools and victimhood are crushing the American child. And a weak commander in chief is leading to a world war around the world. Joe Biden is asleep at the wheel and we are heading towards the edge,” Scott said.

Scott’s speech came on the same day that President Trump named Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate for 2024.

“After lengthy deliberation and consideration, and after taking into account many other incredible talents, I have determined that the person best qualified to serve as Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio,” President Trump announced on his Truth Social platform Monday afternoon.
