If J.D. Vance is elected Vice President, his Senate seat will become vacant.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will select his replacement in the Senate, then a special election will be held in 2026 to determine who will serve the remainder of the term that ends in 2028.

The Hill reported:

If Vance is elected to the senior position, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) would immediately select his successor in the Senate.

Vance was first elected in 2022 and is due to serve a term that expires in 2028. Under Ohio law, his governor-appointed successor would face a special election in November 2026 to see who would serve out the full term.

Governor DeWine’s office told the Cleveland-based Plain Dealer newspaper last month that it was not considering replacing Governor Vance.

“There is no vacancy,” spokesman Dan Tierney said. “Out of respect for both senators, we are not contemplating what would happen if either is unable to serve the full term they were elected to.”

Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami said he would “strongly consider” the vacant seat if offered.

The Daily Wire reported:

Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswami told The Daily Wire on Monday that he would “seriously consider” replacing Sen. J.D. Vance as Ohio’s senator after former President Donald Trump selected him as his running mate in the 2024 election.

At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, The Daily Wire’s Cabot Phillips asked whether Ramaswamy could become a senator if Trump wins, in a situation where Ohio’s Republican governor, Mike DeWine, would have to appoint Vance’s replacement.

“The truth is, if asked, I would seriously consider it and would be open to a frank discussion with President Trump about the areas where I can have the greatest impact on the future of our country,” Ramaswamy said.

“For me, addressing the administrative state has been my greatest passion and my greatest sense of purpose,” he added, “and I think it exists at the federal level in a cancerous form. It exists in all 50 states in this country.”
