Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has requested an unclassified telephone briefing for all senators from the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Secret Service about the attempted assassination of former President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.
The 30-minute information session will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Schumer was briefed on the shooting over the weekend that left one person dead and two rally attendees seriously injured.
He released the report in a call with all senators after Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Gary Peters (D-Mich.) said he would launch a bipartisan investigation into the incident.
Peters told reporters on Monday that senators on the committee have received detailed briefings from law enforcement officials.
He also said he had a lengthy discussion with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday and received a briefing from the FBI on Monday.
Peters also said he would work to “expeditiously” hold a hearing into the shooting by the end of the month.
“I am launching a bipartisan investigation and am focused on finding out exactly what happened and making sure this never happens again,” the president said earlier this week. “We need to ensure that the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies have the resources to protect the president, former presidents and other public officials.”
