Elon Musk Announces Relocation of SpaceX and X/Twitter Headquarters to Texas

Elon Musk, owner of SpaceX and Twitter, has officially announced that he will be relocating the headquarters of both companies from California to Texas, citing concerns over California laws and city safety issues.

Business Insider Reports On Tuesday, Elon Musk announced via Twitter that SpaceX would be relocating its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to SpaceX Starbase near Boca Chica Village, Texas. Musk said the decision was made because California law “attacks both families and businesses.”

The specific law Musk was referring to is a bill signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday. The new law bans “mandated disclosure” rules in public elementary, middle, and high schools, effectively banning teachers from having to notify parents if their child changes their name, pronouns, or gender identity at school. California becomes the first state to make such requirements illegal, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.

Musk called the bill “the final straw” and said, “Because of this law and so many previous laws that attack both families and businesses, SpaceX will be moving our headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas.” He went on to argue that families “have to leave California to protect their children.”

In the same announcement, Musk also revealed that X (formerly Twitter) would be moving its headquarters from San Francisco to Austin, Texas. He justified the decision by saying, “We’re tired of having to avoid gangs of violent drug addicts to get to and from our building.” The move was San Francisco ChronicleThis suggested that Company X was looking to sublease its entire San Francisco headquarters.

These moves follow a pattern established by Musk’s other company, Tesla, which moved its headquarters to Texas in 2021. Musk has also previously expressed an intention to move SpaceX’s corporate operations from Delaware to Texas.

In response to Musk’s announcement, California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote to X, “You’ve caved,” along with a screenshot of a 2022 post from former President Donald Trump, in which he claimed Musk had visited the White House to ask for help with a variety of subsidized projects, including “electric cars that don’t have enough range, self-driving cars that have accidents, and rockets that go nowhere.”

Recent reports have suggested that Musk has formally endorsed Trump following Saturday’s assassination attempt. The world’s richest man plans to donate about $45 million a month to the former president, according to the reports.
