PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf: Who you got, Scottie and Rory or Bryson and Brooks?

The British Open is the final sanctioned event between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf in 2024. There is the Olympics, but tour affiliation is not a factor like in the major tournaments.

The PGA Tour has won the first two majors of 2024, with LIV Golf claiming its latest victory at the U.S. Open.

So the question arises: Will you choose the PGA Tour or LIV Golf for this final major?

Specifically, they paired Rory McIlroy with Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour side and Bryson DeChambeau with Brooks Kopeka on the LIV Golf side.

Let’s take a look at how both teams have performed this year and see who you should root for.

PGA Tour side: Scheffler and McIlroy

One of the biggest stories in 2024 is Scheffler himself, as the world number one has been nearly unstoppable all year.

Scheffler has won six tournaments, including the Masters in April and four of his eight signature events, as well as The Players Championship in March.

Not to mention, Scheffler has two runner-up finishes, 13 top 10s and 14 top 25s, and has never missed the cut in 15 events he has competed in.

Scheffler’s worst result was a tie for 41st at the U.S. Open, which was also his only tournament where he did not finish in at least the top 25.

The former University of Texas Longhorn’s last start came July 1 in the Travelers’ sixth championship game, so he hasn’t played in a game in three weeks.

Despite that break, Scheffler comes into the game with high expectations.

His partner McIlroy has also been doing well this season, currently ranked third in the world and with two wins in 2024. McIlroy and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, before the Northern Irishman won his fourth Wells Fargo Championship the following week for his 26th career victory.

Leading up to the U.S. Open, McIlroy finished in sole second place at the U.S. Open, but it was a heartbreaking finish when he missed two short putts late in the round to lose to DeChambeau.

After a break, McIlroy returned to compete for the win at the Genesis Scottish Open last week, where he finished tied for fourth and shot four rounds under 60.

McIlroy won the Claret Jug in 2014. Scheffler’s best result at the oldest major tournament was a tie for eighth in his 2021 debut.

The PGA Tour has a strong case to make about how successful it is in 2024.

But before you decide, take a look at the LIV golf team.

Coming into the British Open, DeChambeau’s final tournament on the PGA Tour was his second U.S. Open victory, and he also finished tied for sixth at the Masters and second at the PGA Championship.

In LIV golf events, the Crusher GC captain’s best finish was a third-place finish at LIV Nashville. Overall, he has six top-10 finishes in 10 starts. DeChambeau is still looking for his first win of 2024 at LIV.

Koepka hasn’t had as much success in majors as he did in 2023, finishing tied for 45th at Augusta, tied for 26th at the PGA Championship and tied for 26th at the U.S. Open.

At LIV golf events, Koepka has four top 10 finishes, including a win in Singapore, and won on the Saudi Arabia-sponsored tour in 2024, but it’s not his best year.

DeChambeau’s best finish so far at the British Open is a tie for eighth in 2022, while Koepka’s was a tie for fourth in 2019. They also have tied for sixth in 2021 and 2017.

These two are extremely competitive and while they won’t have as many wins in 2024 as they do on the PGA Tour, they’re still formidable options.

It’s a tough decision because all four players are incredibly talented and could win on any given week.

Betting on the PGA Tour this Open Week could be any team you pick, as one of these four teams could be in good form and win the tournament on any given week.

Which side will you choose?
