Justin Leonard, Todd Hamilton and Jack McDonald all shot opening pars. But the two former champions fell into a pot bunker on the second hole, and McDonald hit the green. It’s going to be a long day. There’s a good chance we’ll enjoy it more than some of the competitors. Still, for goodness’ sake, here’s the first leaderboard of the week.

The first 9 holes are against the wind, but the last 9 holes are tougher with the wind picking up, so play in a straight line and you should be able to aim for a score in the mid 60s. Avoid the pot bunkers.
So let’s get started… and 1997 champion Justin Leonard hits his first tee shot of this year’s Open right down the middle. He might be able to sell that score to the leader for cash on Sunday afternoon. 2004 winner Todd Hamilton followed Hamilton in the lead. And finally, 31-year-old Jack McDonald from nearby Kilmarnock won his Open debut by three strokes. Everyone left with a smile of relief after all those nerves.

This is the 152nd British Open and the 10th time the tournament has been played on the famous Ayrshire links at Royal Troon. On the ninth hole, Henrik Stenson held off Phil Mickelson in what is generally considered the greatest one-on-one match in the long and illustrious history of the British Open, except for the legendary duel in the sun between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus at Turnberry in 1977.
