‘Potty-mouthed’ parrot finds home in New York after hundreds apply to adopt him

Pepper, a foul-mouthed parrot, has found his forever home after gaining attention on Facebook and attracting adoptive parents from across the country.

Officials at the Niagara SPCA in Niagara Falls, New York, have been sharing updates about the bird since it was rescued last month.

“Someone please give this guy some soap and a home with some humor!” the Niagara SPCA Facebook post read.

“Pepper is a white-capped Amazon. Yes, she swears, but only a little.”

On June 20, shelter officials said more than 400 people had expressed interest in adopting Pepper. The Niagara SPCA says that number has now been narrowed down to 10.

“We were looking for a foster parent who had experience raising parrots, had information about care and enclosures, and who would be willing to grow old with Pepper, or who had a plan for Pepper if she outlived her years,” the Facebook post said.

The latest announcement, posted on July 13, revealed that Pepper has settled into his new home after staff interviewed candidates.

“If I were to write a headline about his adoption it would read: ‘Foul-mouthed parrot finds paradise. Sailors, truckers and dockworkers welcome,'” the post read.

“We’re happy Pepper has been adopted by a bird-savvy owner who isn’t put off by his colorful language! We hope he continues to terrorize his new family for decades! Go ahead, Pepper, punch him!” the post concludes.

Pepper found sanctuary in Olean, New York, where she lived with a grey parrot named Shelby.

According to a post by the Niagara SPCA, Pepper loves to eat vegetables and greets her owner every time she enters a room, which has garnered over 1,000 responses.

According to the National Audubon Society, a nonprofit organization that protects birds and their habitats across the US, “there are only two creatures that can speak human language: humans and birds.”

Parrots are vocal learners — they understand by hearing and imitating sounds — so they’re “professionals” when it comes to imitating human language, according to the nonprofit.
