The economic impact of Taylor Swift cannot simply be “ignored.”
Fashion designers are upgrading friendship bracelets, an accessory made popular by the superstar singer on her record-breaking Eraser tour, with gold-and-diamond versions costing up to $5,000. The Wall Street Journal reported..
The usually plain bracelets, made of multicolored threads knotted in various patterns or beads with letters strung on stretchy plastic strings, became popular after a lyric from Swift’s 2022 hit “You’re On Your Own, Kid” read: “Make a friendship bracelet, savor the moment.”
High-end designers like Christian Dior, Cartier, and Carolina Bucci quickly jumped on the trend and launched luxury versions.
According to market research firm QuestionPro, Swift’s global popularity has boosted the global economy by $5 billion. In January, Swift was spotted wearing a custom diamond friendship bracelet designed by Michelle Wie West for Wove Made while watching her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs win the AFC Championship Game.
of Customizable Bracelets The gold charm reads “TNT” (for “Taylor and Travis”) and was given to Swift by the Chiefs tight end. It retails for $6,000.
“From that point on, sales just skyrocketed,” Woven Maid CEO Simone Kendall told the Post. “The numbers were incredible.”
In the first week after Swift wore the bracelet in public, Wove Made’s site traffic surged 5,000 percent and jewelry sales increased nearly 2,500 percent, according to the jeweler.
Wove Made custom crafts each bracelet, with designs ranging from diamonds and rubies to black diamonds and gunmetal.
Aside from looking luxurious, this trend has two main appeals for customers.
The first is community: Wearing a friendship bracelet signifies a tangible connection to Swiftie’s fanbase.
And the bracelets are usually given as gifts by customers to their close friends and loved ones.
“There’s something really meaningful hidden in the friendship bracelet culture,” Kendall said.
The CEO said there’s a message behind each customer’s bracelet, whether it’s an anniversary gift, a “baby shower” for a new mom, or matching sterling silver bracelets for two friends (a more affordable $300 item).
Luxury friendship bracelets remind customers of fond childhood memories.
“The best way to have fun [with jewelry] “It’s about remembering childhood memories,” Bernard James, who has been designing jewelry for 12 years, told The Post.
The jewelry brand that bears his name 14k gold friendship bracelet $1,090 with customizable charms.
James said she wasn’t even aware of the Swifty craze until a few months ago, when she saw sales of bracelets skyrocket.
While Swift has spearheaded the rise of these luxury bracelets, traditional children’s bracelets have also found success amid the Eraser Tour trend.
Sky Castle Toys president Josh Roselle told The Post that pre-orders for the “Sticky Rolls” bracelets, which come with hundreds of miniature collectible stickers, had sold out after two days.
The bracelets, priced at $7.99 each, are being promoted on social media, including on YouTube videos of girls decorating phone cases, laptops, Crocs and even toilet seats.
These posts have garnered 100 million views across the company’s social media channels since June 8.
But the Sticky Rolls aren’t on store shelves yet.
That will happen next month.
“The last time bracelets were in fashion was over 10 years ago, when Siri bands were popular,” Roselle said.
