President Joe Biden plans to drop out of the race this weekend and either endorse Vice President Kamala Harris or hold an open convention to choose his next nominee, according to a new report.
by The New York TimesPeople close to Biden said Thursday that the president “has begun to accept the idea that he cannot win the election in November and that he may be forced to cave in to growing demands from many anxious members of his party and withdraw from the race.”
One source close to the president said Biden had not yet decided whether to drop out of the race, while another said “reality is setting in” and that Biden “will soon make an announcement endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.” The Times reported:
The account was based on interviews with four people close to the president, all of whom said the situation was extremely sensitive and spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid offending the president. Biden has been isolating at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, since being diagnosed with COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Conflicting reports have been circulating on social media about the president’s next move. The New York TimesSources say Biden may endorse Kamala Harris soon, but reporter Mark Halperin said “multiple sources” are insisting the president will let an open convention decide on his next nominee.

The president’s family is reportedly adamant in supporting him to continue the campaign, and other aides have also told him that, contrary to the polls, the race against Donald Trump remains tight.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reportedly told President Joe Biden to drop out of the race this week, a claim his office has not denied, as Breitbart News reported on Wednesday. According to ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, Schumer had a “frank, one-on-one conversation” with the president, where he allegedly advised him to step down to give Democrats a fighting chance in the fall election. Schumer’s office has not denied the conversation took place.
“We’re hearing that Chuck Schumer had a frank, one-on-one discussion with Biden in Rehoboth on Saturday afternoon, in which Schumer forcefully argued that it would be best for Biden to withdraw from the race,” Carl Onx said.
When pressed, Schumer’s office did not deny the allegations.
“Mr. Schumer’s office would not comment on the specifics of the conversation, saying only that Leader Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus,” Kahl said.
Kahl said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-Calif., has expressed a similar sentiment.
“Sources say Hakeem Jeffries has expressed a similar view to Biden. A spokesperson for Jeffries told me, ‘The letter that House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sent to his House Democratic colleagues speaks for itself. It was a private conversation and remains private,'” Kahl added.
White House press secretary Andrew Bates later told Kahl, “The president has informed both leaders that he is their party’s nominee, that he intends to win, and that he looks forward to working with them to pass a 100-day package to help working families.”

The conversation with Schumer reportedly came after Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) warned in a recent private meeting that Democrats stand to lose everything in this election as long as President Joe Biden remains the front-runner. Schiff delivered the warning to donors at a meeting on Saturday before the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Schiff was concerned that Democrats would not only lose the White House, but also lose lower-tier races for the House and Senate.
“If he’s our nominee, I think we’re going to lose,” Schiff said at the meeting, according to minutes obtained by Congress. The New York Times“And we’re going to lose the Senate and very likely lose our chance to take back the House.”
