A major internet outage on July 19 caused IT problems for major institutions around the world, cancelling flights, disrupting banking apps, halting media broadcasts and even affecting supermarket computer systems.
The company confirmed that the issue was caused by a flaw in a Windows software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
Airports in the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and the UK all reported problems with their IT systems.
American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Allegiant Air have all grounded flights, citing communications issues.
CrowdStrike’s CEO said this was “not a security incident or cyber attack” and that “the issue was identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.”
A global internet outage hit airlines and businesses around the world on Friday, but the CEO of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said it was not a cyber attack.
“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers affected by the flaw found in the single content update for Windows hosts,” CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said in a post on X. “Mac and Linux hosts are not affected.”
“This is not a security incident or cyber attack,” Kurtz added. “The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed. We have provided customers with the latest updates on our support portal, and we will continue to provide complete and ongoing updates on our website.”
