“I can’t imagine what he’s been through,” Kelly said of “45.”

On Saturday, a gunman opened fire in an attempt to assassinate Republican candidate Trump, striking him in the ear, as the former president was speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“I wrote ‘Make America Great Again’ a week before the assassination attempt,” Kelly said. “It just seemed like the right thing to do to get the song out there.”

Singer-songwriter Kelly said he spent a few days crafting the patriotic lyrics. He hopes the single will be an American anthem for those trying to find their own voice. He added that the song was easy to write because it was born out of his own emotions and frustrations with the state of the world.

“I just felt that way in my heart, in my gut. I’m determined and I’m going to put this song out there,” Kelly said. “I’m really proud of it. At the end of the day, I’m a real American who cares.”

Kelly, a Florida native, said he was raised by his parents to speak out for what he believes in and never waver or back down. He said he remains true to those values and uses his creative interests to show his support for Trump.

“At the end of the day, maybe this song will resonate with people who are still on the fence,” Kelly said. “People who don’t agree with what I’m saying might understand that I have a heart and I stand by what I believe in. And it doesn’t get any more authentic than that.”

“I am a proud American and I believe we can make America great again.”

Kelly expects a backlash, but isn’t worried about the prospect.

“I’m interested in giving a voice to people who need a voice and who want a voice,” Kelly concluded.
