CHICAGO — A Chicago mail carrier was shot and killed while walking along his delivery route, authorities said.
U.S. Postal Service investigators are offering a reward of up to $250,000 for tips that lead to the case.
Police said Octavia Redmond, 48, was shot just before noon Friday on South Harvard Avenue in Chicago’s South Side neighborhood, after the gunman fled in a vehicle.
James McGhee said he had been working in his garden earlier when he greeted Redmond and they had been chatting about the fine weather.
Kim Sanders, who works at a nearby group home, said Redmond’s death had left her heart “broken.”
“She was just going up and down the block delivering mail and not bothering anybody,” Sanders said.
The flag was raised at union hall to honour Redmond, who has been a mail carrier for more than 15 years. Her husband also works for the postal service.
“We are federal government employees. How dare they allow this to happen? Our members are afraid to go to work,” said Elise Foster, a local official with the National Association of Letter Carriers.
