This Sunday’s news programs are likely to focus on former President Trump’s choice of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate.
Trump announced Vance as his running mate at a Truth Social event on Monday, the first day of this year’s Republican National Committee (RNC) in Milwaukee, ending years of speculation about who his partner would be in his quest for the White House.
“After lengthy deliberation and consideration, and taking into account many other extraordinary talents, I have determined that the person best qualified to serve as Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio,” Trump said on Truth Social.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, is scheduled to appear Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” and CNN’s “State of the Union.” I took a photo He met with Vance at the Republican National Convention this week and posted about it on his X account on Wednesday.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” this week. He appeared to congratulate Trump on his colleague’s choice. On Monday, a Midwestern Republican will be his running mate.
“My friend @JDVance1 would be a great VP,” Johnson said in the X post.
With the Republican National Convention underway, pressure has grown for President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-Minn.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.), along with their colleague Senator Peter Welch (D-Vermont), called on President Biden to withdraw from the race on Friday and Thursday, respectively.
Several other House Democrats, including prominent Senate candidate Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), also voiced support for Biden dropping out of the race this week.
Amid the confusion surrounding Biden’s candidacy, the president and his allies continue to insist that Biden will continue to campaign.
“Of course the president is in this race,” Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said Friday, adding that the president is “more committed than ever to defeating Donald Trump.”
“You’ve heard it many times directly from the president: He’s in this race to win, he’s our nominee and he’s going to be our president for a second term,” she said.
Former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-Louisiana), co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, is scheduled to appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday and is likely to be asked about his position as a presidential candidate.
