Kamala Harris now backed by more than half of delegates needed to win nomination: report

According to the Associated Press, Vice President Kamala Harris currently has the support of more than half of the delegates needed to win the presidential nomination.

It was reported Monday that more than 1,000 delegates have told the media or publicly announced they plan to support Harris at the Democratic National Convention, more than half the number of delegates needed to win the nomination vote, according to an Associated Press investigation.

The Associated Press noted that the poll is an unofficial tally because Democratic delegates are free to vote for the candidate of their choice at the party’s convention in late August.

Under current Democratic Party rules, a candidate must receive the support of 1,976 delegates on the first ballot to win the nomination, according to the Associated Press.

After insisting for weeks that he was “running to win,” President Biden withdrew from the race on Monday and endorsed the same candidate.

Biden’s dismal performance in a June debate first sparked skepticism that the 81-year-old politician might not be able to serve another four years or defeat former President Trump in November.

Faced with falling poll numbers and concerns about his declining cognitive function, the dam of support within his party has burst, with many Democratic lawmakers and leaders calling for Biden to step down.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus my efforts on the duties of my presidency for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a statement on Twitter.

“My first decision as the party’s nominee in 2020 was to select Kamala Harris as my vice president, and it was the best decision I ever made. Today I fully endorse and support Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats, it’s time to unite and defeat Trump,” he said.

Within 24 hours of Biden announcing his planned campaign shutdown, Harris had raised an astounding $81 million, her campaign announced Monday.

In an email, the campaign touted the amount raised as “the largest 24-hour fundraising raise in the history of a presidential election.”

Democrats are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to finalize the timing of Harris’ nomination for president.

The campaign also announced that more than 888,000 grassroots donors gave in the past day, with 60% of them giving for the first time during the 2024 election cycle. The donations include money raised by the campaign, the Democratic National Committee and the Joint Fundraising Committee.

“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris truly represents the grassroots energy and enthusiasm we need to win this election,” campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said in a statement.

In contrast, the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee announced they raised about $53 million through online digital fundraising platforms in the first 24 hours after the former president was convicted of 34 felony counts in a criminal trial in New York City.
