Popular PGA Tour players on the FedEx Cup bubble

Welcome to Playing Through’s morning ritual, Golf Talk Today.

Yesterday we updated the FedExCup standings to see who is currently in the top 30.

Today, we’ll focus on players at the other end of the spectrum – those who may not be able to play in the first playoff event in Memphis.

This season marks the second year with the new playoff rules in place.

Previously, the top 125 qualified for the first playoff event, but now it’s just the top 70. However, the PGA Tour’s new FedEx Cup Fall offers some incentives for those who can’t make it to Atlanta.

Still, with 55 playoff spots gone, the competition is even tougher than before.

Let’s take a look at some notable players ranked outside the top 70 in the FedExCup standings, as well as the top 10 players ranked inside the top 70.

FedExCup: PGA Tour players to watch outside the top 70

*As of July 24, 2024

73. Lee Hodges: 596 points
76. Keith Mitchell: 538 points
77. Nikolai Hoygaard: 532 points
81. Harry Hole: 486 points
100. Rickie Fowler: 374 points
113th Joel Dahmen: 316 points
116th Matt Wallace: 295 points

FedEx Cup Standings: PGA Tour Players 60-70

60th place Minh Wu Yi: 783 points
61. Jordan Spieth: 782 points
62. Taylor Moore: 741 points
63rd Mark Hubbard: 737 points
64th Nick Dunlap: 701 points
65th Brendon Todd: 668 points
66. Seamus Power: 659 points
67. Emiliano Grillo: 648 points
68. Maverick McNealy: 636 points
69th Victor Perez: 633 points
70. Davis Riley: 621 points

Of the athletes mentioned above, 10 are competing in the 3M Open. Of course, some are set to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris and have therefore chosen not to compete.

The players competing in the FedEx Cup bubble at next week’s Olympics are:

— Victor Perez, France
— Ming Woo Lee, Australia
— Nikolaj Højgaard, Denmark
— Emiliano Grillo, Argentina

The Wyndham Championship is still on the schedule and FedExCup points need to be secured, but a guy like Rickie Fowler didn’t play in Minnesota, but he’s 100th in FedExCup points and probably should play. Taking a week off after a major is understandable, but for many players, it’s make-or-break time.

Some players will punch their ticket to Memphis with a win this week, while others will need two strong weeks to finally qualify. Stay tuned as we update the standings as the playoffs get closer.
