Disgraced Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez to resign — a month from now

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who was convicted last week on more than a dozen federal charges related to bribery and corruption, has finally offered to resign from his office, effective one month from now.

On Tuesday, Sen. Menendez letter The senator announced his resignation to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, declaring his departure effective “at the close of business on August 20, 2024.” It comes more than a month after he was convicted of conspiracy, bribery, extortion, obstruction of justice and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt while chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

In his letter, he suggested one of the reasons he was stepping down was because his position as a senator could jeopardize the chances of a “successful appeal.” “Factual circumstances before the Ethics Committee are not privileged.”

In his letter, Menendez explained the reason for the delay: “This will allow my staff to transition to other possibilities, allow for an orderly process to transfer pending electoral files and select an interim successor, and allow me time to personally conclude my Senate business.”

of New York Post He took a more cynical stance, pointing out that if he resigns on August 20, the senators who supposedly accepted bribes of cash, Mercedes-Benz convertibles and even gold bars will be able to collect two more paychecks from American taxpayers when they leave office.

He is scheduled Sentenced October 29th.

Menendez, 70, cut his teeth in the tough political world of Union City, New Jersey, in the early 1980s by testifying against his mentor, Mayor William Musto, for alleged corruption, but he appears to have ended up embroiled in the same corrupt political machine.

From time Menendez Menendez was appointed to the Senate in 2006 by Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat who vacated the seat after winning the gubernatorial election, but has since been relentlessly pursued by local and federal prosecutors and fended off charges that he misappropriated public funds for favors and to individuals and nonprofits.

Menendez also maintains his innocence despite being convicted in his most recent case and intends to appeal. In fact, he hinted in his letter that he would resign from his position as a senator because it could jeopardize the chances of a “successful appeal.” “The factual circumstances under consideration by the Ethics Committee are not privileged,” he said. “This is evidenced by the fact that the Committee’s staff director and chief counsel were called to testify at my trial.”

Menendez is up for reelection in November and has vowed not to run again as a Democrat, but has declared himself an independent. But with Democratic challenger Rep. Andy Kim expected to win handily, Menendez has until Aug. 16 to withdraw.

If Menendez leaves the Senate, Murphy could appoint an interim replacement until the winner of the election is sworn in in January. Murphy is not expected to nominate Kim to avoid the appearance of trying to sway the election outcome.
