Fox News sends debate invitation to Trump, Harris campaigns

Fox News has invited both former President Trump and Vice President Harris to participate in a debate that it will host and broadcast, just weeks before the pair are expected to face off in the November presidential election.

In a letter sent to both the Trump and Harris campaigns dated Tuesday, Fox proposed holding the debate in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 17.

“We are open to discussing the exact date, format, location and whether or not an audience will be present,” Fox executive Jay Wallace wrote in a letter to both sides, a copy of which was obtained by The Hill on Wednesday.

Wallace suggested the debate could be moderated by top Fox political anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, adding that the purpose of the event is to “foster informed political dialogue” ahead of the election.

Ms Harris is expected to be the Democratic nominee next month after President Biden dropped out of the race over the weekend.

Biden and Trump had agreed to hold two debates during this election cycle — one that aired on CNN last month and sparked calls for Biden to drop out of the race, and the second to air on ABC on September 10.

The Trump campaign has said it plans to hold multiple debates with Harris but is opposed to a showdown with the vice president hosted by ABC.

In social media posts this week, Trump signaled his preference for a debate hosted by Fox, the top-rated cable network that features a host of pro-Trump pundits and commentators in primetime.

The Hill has reached out to the Harris campaign for comment on Fox’s proposal.
