FBI investigates ‘inappropriate’ Trump shooting post by person affiliated with agency, director says

Bethel Park, Pennsylvania FBI Director Christopher Wray said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing that the agency is under internal investigation for making “grossly inappropriate” posts about the assassination attempt on former President Trump.

Wray’s comments came as the bureau’s director was testifying under oath about the shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday and the subsequent investigation into the suspected shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) asked the attorney general whether “any FBI agents sent text messages, emails or expressed disappointment that President Trump survived the assassination attempt, or wrote op-eds about the assassination attempt?”

Ray said he had not heard of any agents making inappropriate comments, but that one person “posted something that I thought was outrageous, totally inappropriate and unacceptable.”

The bureau’s director said the individual has been referred to the FBI’s Office of Inspector General for an internal investigation.

“That person has been referred to the Audit Department, which is the internal investigations division that will handle the disciplinary process,” Ray said.

Ray did not disclose where the posters were located or what their titles or employment statuses were.

Wednesday’s explosive testimony also included revelations about Crooks’s search history and details about the morning of the assassination attempt on Trump.

Wray said Crooks had used a laptop to research details about the shooting of John F. Kennedy and had flown a drone near the rally just two hours before Kennedy spoke.

Wray said authorities still don’t know how Crooks got onto the roof of the building where he targeted Trump, but they don’t believe he used a ladder.

“No ladder was found at the scene,” Wray told Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn. “He purchased a ladder. But the ladder was not found at the scene.”

Wray’s testimony came the day after Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following pressure from Democrats and Republicans over security lapses at Trump’s July 13 rally.
