Clyburn says Harris has 'well beyond' support needed to top the Democratic ticket

Rep. Jim Clyburn of Colorado said Friday that VP Harris has “far more support” than she needs to officially win the Democratic nomination for the White House, following President Biden’s outgoing endorsement of her.

“I think the vice president has far more votes than he needs to win the nomination on the first ballot,” Clyburn said. Said Interview with Jose Diaz-Balart of MSNBC.

Harris has emerged as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination after Biden dropped out of the race over the weekend. She met the threshold to win the nomination on Monday, the day after the president withdrew from the race, and has quickly garnered significant endorsements from key party figures and significant fundraising.

When asked about the significance of both former President Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama publicly endorsing Harris, Clyburn said it “means a lot.”

“I was [president] “I met him a few times last week and I know he’s very enthusiastic about this campaign. I think he’s going to be very supportive going forward,” he added.

Harris’ campaign released a video of a phone call between her and the Obamas ahead of November in which they pledged their support for her.

“Michelle and I called to let you know we couldn’t be more proud to endorse you and that we’re going to do everything in our power to help you win this election and get into the Oval Office,” Obama said in the video.

Though Harris’ campaign has brought new energy and excitement to the party, she still faces a tough road ahead in the presidential election if she wants to beat former President Trump.

According to The Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls, Trump leads Harris by 2.1 points, with the former president’s approval rating at 47.8 percent and the vice president’s at 45.7 percent.
