Sarah Bacon, Kassidy Cook earn Team USA’s first medal at Paris Olympics

Americans Sarah Bacon and Cassidy Cook won silver in the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard event on Saturday, giving the United States its first medal at the Paris Olympics.

Bacon and Cook beat the team of Great Britain’s Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew-Jensen, ahead of China’s Yani Zhang and Yiwen Zhang, who together earned 314.64 points in the event.

Bacon and Cook both missed out on competing in the Olympics last year, but Cook did compete in the 3-meter springboard event at the 2016 Olympics, finishing 13th.

Both swimmers have won numerous medals and made a name for themselves on the world stage, with Bacon winning gold in the one-meter springboard at the 2019 World Championships.

Chang and Chen won the event with 337.68 points, the first Olympic medals of their careers for both divers, adding another gold medal to their resumes. They have both won multiple gold medals at world championships.

China had already won a gold medal in the shooting event earlier in the day, giving them a total of two gold medals.

Harper and Mu Jensen won the bronze medal at the 2024 World Championships, behind Zhang and Chen and Australia’s Madison Keeney and Annabelle Smith. The Australian team finished fifth at the Paris Olympics behind Italy’s Elena Bertocchi and Chiara Peracani.
