US wins first gold at Olympics in 4×100-meter men’s freestyle relay

The American team is a gold medal contender.

It took until late Saturday night, but in the final swimming event on Saturday night, the United States won the 4×100-meter freestyle relay behind the quartet of Chris Juliano, Jack Alexie, Hunter Armstrong and Caleb Dressel to win their first gold medal of the 2024 Olympics.

The United States won in 3 minutes 9.28 seconds, just over a second ahead of Australia, which took silver in 3 minutes 10.35 seconds.

Italy finished third in 3:10.70.

Dressel, who anchored the relay, won her eighth gold medal of the event, but the United States controlled the race from start to finish and only had to hold on to their lead in the final leg.

Alexie, from Morristown, New Jersey, led the relay and won her first Olympic medal.

Australia ended the night as swimming’s biggest winners, winning two gold medals in the women’s 400m freestyle and women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Medals are scheduled for Sunday in the men’s 400m individual medley, women’s 100m butterfly and men’s 100m breaststroke.
