Dragonfly Swarm Terrorizes Rhode Island Beachgoers

A swarm of dragonflies descended on a popular Rhode Island beach on Saturday, leaving people stunned as sunbathing children screamed and tried to shoo them away, to no avail.

A spectacular swarm of flying insects was caught on camera at a crowded venue. Misquamicut Beachin Westerly, WCVB reported.

Footage captured by beachgoer Richard Sontag shows a plague of biblical proportions spreading, with shrieks heard in the background.

According to Sontag, it was like an “invasion” of dragonflies.

“We were having a lovely day at Misquamicut State Beach when we had to endure an infestation of dragonflies,” another beachgoer, Stephanie Martin, told the outlet.

“Male reproductive behavior involves selecting a territory that is attractive to females, which he must then defend from other potential mates,” states the 2006 article. “Males have often been observed racing across ponds and engaging in spectacular aerial duels for the right to mate with any female darnur in the territory.”
