Authorities said a 17-year-old boy wearing a “black hoodie” attacked children at The Heart Space, where a yoga and dance event was being held, on Monday morning.
The attacker was later detained, but authorities did not release his name.
“It’s like a scene from a horror movie,” said local shopkeeper Colin Parry. BBC“They’re here now screaming, it’s like they’re from America and not like sunny Southport.”
The children, aged between six and 11, were rushed to three local children’s hospitals following the attack and are currently being treated by medical professionals.
According to reports that have surfaced, the suspect arrived at the yoga space after being dropped off by a taxi.
Meanwhile, a Hart Space employee explained the chaos to reporters.
“When I arrived I found a man who looked extremely distraught and confused,” he said. “He saw two children running out of Hart Space and there was blood on the side of the car so he thought they’d been hit, but in fact the children had been stabbed and were inside the car.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer also issued a statement following the deadly attack.
“We have just received horrific and extremely shocking news from Southport,” Mr Starmer said. “My thoughts are with all those affected and I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response. I will keep you updated as the situation develops.”
