In February 2022, “surveillance state” New York City introduced speed cameras equipped with microphones to fine cars that exceed certain noise levels, Breitbart News reported at the time.
A NYC Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed to Road & Track that the system is part of a pilot program that has been running since September 2021. The system appears to work similarly to speed cameras, which automatically record speeding violations, except the new system uses a sound level meter to record a vehicle’s decibel levels and a camera to match them with license plates.
The city was also preparing to impose a “congestion fee” on residents and visitors in June 2023, after a plan to impose a hefty toll on driving into Manhattan’s most congested areas received federal approval, according to Breitbart News.
“The program, which could begin as early as spring 2024, would bring New York City in line with cities including London, Singapore and Stockholm that have implemented similar taxes on drivers who perform daily commutes,” the media outlet reported.
