Brazil sends swimmer home from Paris Olympics for leaving village without authorization

Brazil on Sunday expelled Ana Carolina Vieira from the Paris Olympics for violating protocol.

The Brazilian Swimming Federation said in a statement that it had notified the Brazilian Olympic Committee that both Vieira and Gabriel Santos had left the Olympic Village without proper authorization. Santos was given a warning, but Vieira was sent home.

Authorities said Vieira “disrespectfully and aggressively” challenged the violations.

“We’re not here to play or go on vacation,” said Gustavo Otsuka, head of Brazil’s swimming team. He told Reuters.“We work for Brazil, for 200 million taxpayers who work for us. We can’t mess around here,” she said, taking a totally inappropriate position to express her opinion and dismay over the organization of the relay.

“At this time, we decided to bring the situation before our disciplinary committee, discuss it and take appropriate action. Ultimately, we found out through the (social media) post.”

In a video posted to her Instagram, Vieira said she had left a lot of her belongings behind in the Olympic Village and was unable to get in touch with anyone.

She said she would consider legal action.

Swimming World He noted that both Vieira and Santos have already completed their Olympic swimming events: Vieira’s team finished 12th in the 400-meter relay and Santos’ team finished 10th in the men’s relay.
