Federal Judge Orders UCLA to Submit Plan to Protect Jewish Students

Federal Judge Mark C. Scarce on Monday ordered the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to come up with a plan to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitic camps on campus and protect them from discrimination.

The order calls on UCLA to work with lawyers for the Jewish plaintiffs in the case, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and the law firm Clement & Murphy, to submit a written proposal by Aug. 5.

As Breitbart News reported, UCLA allowed a large encampment on campus in April, violating the civil rights of Jewish students and others by blocking access to public areas of campus, including classrooms.

Jewish students sued UCLA for civil rights, arguing that the university acknowledged that it had erected an iron barrier around an anti-Semitic, pro-Palestinian encampment to stop them from expanding.

The Becket Foundation reported in a press release:

“UCLA forced me to choose between being a student and being Jewish,” said Yitzchok Frankel, a third-year UCLA law student. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to have my case in court and look forward to being able to safely return to campus next month.”

Yitzchok Frankel is a law student and father of four who was subjected to anti-Semitic harassment last semester simply for wearing a kippah, which forced him to abandon his usual commute around campus. [so-called by the plaintiffs] “Jews are not allowed in these areas. Frankel recounted how UCLA’s repeated failures forced her to cancel plans with her family on campus and forgo an opportunity to mentor freshman Jewish students on campus during orientation week. Another law student, Eden Shemelian, also said she was forced to refrain from using campus facilities and attending law school orientation events because of UCLA’s failure to guarantee safety and equal access for Jewish students.

“It is abhorrent that one of America’s most prestigious universities would aid and abet anti-Semitic instigators who harass and discriminate against Jewish students,” said Mark Rienzi, president of Becket University and an attorney for the students. “UCLA’s behavior must change, and we look forward to developing an appropriate plan to protect Jewish students on campus.”
