South Pasadena rolls out fully electric police fleet

A California city has officially switched its police department’s fleet from gasoline-powered police vehicles to all-electric police vehicles.

South Pasadena, located northeast of Los Angeles, on Monday introduced the South Pasadena Police Department’s (SPPD) all-electric fleet of 20 Tesla vehicles, including 10 Model Y and 10 Model 3s, according to a press release.

City officials said that by switching exclusively to Teslas in its police fleet, SPPD has become “the first law enforcement agency in the nation to completely replace its gasoline-powered vehicles with non-polluting electric vehicles.”

“This transition reflects the city’s vision for a sustainable future based on both sound fiscal and environmental stewardship,” Mayor Evelyn Znaimer said in a statement.

The city said the switch to Tesla police vehicles is expected to save about $4,000 per vehicle per year in energy costs.
