A suspected gang member was arrested Monday in the murder of a 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed while walking home from a Nets game in Brooklyn five months ago, but the gunman remains at large, authorities and law enforcement sources said.
According to an indictment filed by Brooklyn prosecutors, Cheikh Kouraichi, 20, is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon in the death of teenager Troy Gill.
Sources told The Washington Post that Kouraichi, of Brooklyn, was inside a car when a gunman fired multiple shots at Gill on February 29, fatally wounding him and sending him to the sidewalk.
Gill was shot in the chest and upper body around 10:40 p.m. in Crown Heights while on his way home from a Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays Center.
Sources have previously said he may have been the target of an attack by a rival gang.
Koraich also faces a charge of first-degree manslaughter in connection with a separate shooting that occurred on the same day that Gill was killed, authorities said.
In the separate incident, shots were rang out in front of 586 Snediker Ave. around 11 p.m., but no one was injured, police said.
Sources said Kouraichi is a member of a gang, but it’s unclear which gang.
Police say he has five prior arrests, including for criminal damage to property, endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon and grand theft.
Prior to Monday’s new charges, his last arrest was on June 28, when he was accused of crashing onto someone else’s property in Queens.
Kouraici was arraigned in court on Monday and remanded in custody.
