Ellen DeGeneres isn’t always smiling.
Patrick Warburton said he once had a public feud with the 66-year-old comedian and former talk show host after he turned down a guest spot on a sitcom she starred in in the 1990s.
“I’ve been a guest on Ellen,” Warburton, 59, told SiriusXM. “Jessica Shaw’s Spotlight” It was released on Monday.
“They asked me to come back and do another one, and I’d just finished a guest spot and was ready to move on, and I said it wasn’t working for me, OK?” he explained. “And that was that.”
The “Seinfeld” actress continued, “Two weeks later, I was having lunch with a friend at a restaurant called Orso in Beverly Hills, and Ellen came over to our table and said, ‘You’re too big for my show right now.’
“And I said, ‘No, Ellen,’ I said, ‘We just bumped into each other,’ and she probably realised it was just a joke and walked away,” he added.
After DeGeneres confronted him, Warburton said he realised he would “never” be invited back onto her talk show, which aired from 2003 to 2022.
“She was rejected,” he said.
“It was just weird because when you say you have a conflict and then you don’t do anything about it, it seems like you’re okay with it,” Warburton continued. “I never expected the star of the show to come to me and call out your crap and that was it.”
“And I always thought, ‘Oh, Ellen has a great show. It’s so much fun. I’d never be on it.’
However, Warburton revealed that he is a “huge Ellen fan”.
“When I think back to working on that show, she was such an incredible comedian, right up there with the audience and the talk,” he said. “She was second to none.”
The Washington Post has reached out to a representative for DeGeneres for comment.
Warburton appeared in three episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 1995.
In the ABC sitcom DeGeneres’ character came out as a lesbian. This drew a huge backlash from advertisers and religious groups, and DeGeneres herself came out about her sexuality on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

“As our company has grown rapidly, I have not been able to keep track of everything and have relied on others to do their jobs the way I wanted them to.
