Norah O’Donnell, who stayed in third place for five years, CBS Evening News.
“Following this year’s election, I have decided to step down as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News to accept a new position at the network,” she said. I have written She told Stuff: “We’ve just spent five amazing years together. I love what I do and feel incredibly lucky to work with some of the best journalists and people in the industry.”
The once-venerable evening news show, hosted by Walter Cronkite for 20 years and then Dan Rather for 14, has never recovered from a stain known as Rathergate. During the 2004 presidential election between Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) and incumbent Republican President George W. Bush, Dan Rather and CBS News used a false document to claim that Bush had gone missing without authorization from his time in the Texas Air National Guard. Much to the network’s embarrassment, Rather’s false information was exposed online by ordinary bloggers, who quickly realized that the document had been created in Microsoft Word and could not have been produced on an early 1970s typewriter.
After Rather was asked to step down as CBS anchor, former Confronting the state Bob Schieffer hosted the show from 2005 to 2006, followed by a disastrous Katie Couric from 2006 to 2011. Harry Smith hosted for part of 2011, then Scott Perry from 2011 to 2017, Anthony Mason for six months, Jeff Glore from 2017 to 2019, and then a rotating cast of hosts for a few months after that, before O’Donnell took over.
O’Donnell will remain with CBS and pursue other endeavors.
Far Left variety Reports:
CBS News has not named a replacement for O’Donnell. Possible candidates include “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan and Washington correspondent Major Garrett, who both fill in occasionally when O’Donnell is unavailable or away on business, as well as “NFL Today” host and CBS News special correspondent James Brown, who also fills in occasionally. Weekend anchors Jerrika Duncan and Adriana Diaz are also being considered.
Like that matters.
