Discussing 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris’ border record on NBC’s “MTP Now” broadcast Wednesday, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said that “with the right leadership in Washington” immigration can be addressed “like we did with the Gang of Eight bill, border security, a path to citizenship for 11 million people, the DREAM Act, and a visa bill that’s so important to the agriculture sector.”
“When it comes to Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), the Trump campaign has been on a full-on attack on her record on the border. Just yesterday, at a rally in Atlanta, the vice president tried to refute those allegations very aggressively. Will Sen. Mark Kelly tone it down?” host Gabe Gutierrez asked.
Bennet responded: “Oh, I think he can help a lot on that issue. He understands the border. … He’s from a border state. But listen, the reality is that the Republicans walked away from this immigration bill because Donald Trump wanted to keep it as a campaign issue. That’s no secret to anybody. What’s less known is that this isn’t the first time this has happened. I was part of the Gang of Eight. Ten years ago now, four Republicans and four Democrats wrote the last comprehensive immigration bill that passed the Senate with 68 votes. So who killed it? The House Freedom Caucus killed it. They don’t actually want to solve the problem, they just want to campaign on the issue. … And the reality is that the country needs to address this, and we need to address it the same way we did with the Gang of Eight bill, with border security, with the 11 million path to citizenship, with the DREAM Act, and with the visa bill that’s so important to the agriculture sector. And I think we can do that. This is something that we can do with the right leadership in Washington.”
