Tarik Cohen, who was hoping to return to the Jets this summer, has informed the team that he is retiring.
Cohen, 29, was an All-Pro returning player for the Bears in 2018, but injuries have put a halt to his career.
He last played in an NFL regular season in 2020, breaking his leg and tearing two ligaments in his knee.
He missed the remainder of the 2020 season and all of 2021 before attempting a return in 2022 after rupturing his Achilles tendon, and spent last year on the Panthers’ practice squad.
The Jets signed Cohen this spring in part because of new kickoff rules. The team thought Cohen could be one of their returners, and he performed well in the spring and the first week of camp.
On Tuesday, he spoke about how well he feels and his journey back to playing condition.
“I feel like I’m back in full force,” Cohen said. “I want to show the Jets my explosiveness and the smarts I’ve gained in the league and help everyone at my position the more I improve.”

Two days later, he apparently changed his mind.
