The 2024 NFL season unofficially began on Thursday night, but it also brought with it the league’s new kickoff rules, which have sparked mixed reactions.
While stars like C.J. Stroud and rookie Caleb Williams didn’t play in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game between the Bears and Texans, a new policy dubbed “Dynamic Kickoff” likely drew attention.
Many fans and analysts found the XFL-style format unnatural.
“The new kickoff is going to look fake for the rest of our lives,” ESPN analyst Kevin Clark said. I wrote to X“We have to remind ourselves that we’re doing the same thing every kickoff until we pass it. It’s not going to work. It’s unfortunate, but we’ve got to go back to touchbacks.”
Other fans weren’t as mincing words when replying to the kick’s clip.
“This is weird. Not bad but it looks weird,” one user wrote.
“That’s complete nonsense.” another person joked. It got over 750 likes.
The main reason for dislike may indeed be the presentation.
Instead of defenders lining up next to the kicker and sprinting down the field to face blockers head-on, both lines of players are stuck until the ball is caught or hits the ground.
This gives the play a more lethargic feel.
At the same time, the purpose of the kickoff changes was to encourage returns by imposing a heavy penalty on touchbacks (currently placed at the 30-yard line) and to require kicks to be returned between the goal line and 20 yards, now known as the “landing zone.”
The introduction of the rule proved to be a foreshadowing as all six kicks in the first half were returned.
Last season saw the lowest kickoff rate ever at 22%, but some fans seem to be happy with the improvement.
“A kickoff where the returner actually has to return the kick, and the blocker doesn’t have to flatten his foot when he runs into a player running full speed towards him? I’d love to try that.” Expressed.
“If it slips through the cracks…it’s a house call.” Another opinionThis suggests the potential for more explosive play.
However, there were no particularly notable returns from Canton, Ohio in the first half, and neither Chicago nor Houston advanced beyond their own 28-yard line through the first 30 minutes of the game.
With only one preseason game played so far, the team will have ample opportunity to test out the new kickoff style before the regular season begins in early September.
The NFL regular season begins on Thursday, Sept. 5, when the Ravens and Chiefs face off in a rematch of the AFC Championship Game.
