Several Florida counties opened evacuation shelters Saturday ahead of a Gulf of Mexico weather system forecasting Tropical Storm Deby.

According to a news release from Gov. DeSantis’ (R-Fla.) office, the governor declared states of emergency for 54 of the state’s 67 counties on Thursday to allow state officials “to get critical resources to communities ahead of areas potentially affected by the storm.”

Additionally, the Governor amended his executive order on Friday to add seven more counties to the list of counties under his emergency declaration, bringing the total to 61.

The center warned that certain parts of the state could experience hurricane conditions by Sunday night and tropical storm conditions later Saturday, with storm surges of up to three to five feet possible in some locations.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that 10 million people were under tropical storm warnings as of Saturday morning.
