New York City Fire Injures 14, Displaces Dozens of Queens Residents

A fire that broke out in New York City on Saturday destroyed several homes and vehicles and injured 11 firefighters and three local residents, authorities said.

According to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), it took more than 200 firefighters about two hours to bring the blaze under control.

“This was a very intense fire that involved seven buildings and a rear and garage area,” FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeiffer told the outlet.

Of the 14 people reported with minor injuries, FDNY EMS Deputy Chief Grace Casciola said 11 were firefighters and three were civilians.

Red Cross spokesman Frederick Klein said seven families – 10 children and 22 adults – whose homes were damaged in the fire were now being provided with emergency accommodation and financial assistance.

A teenager who lives where the fire began on Francis Lewis Street said the blaze started with an explosion on a neighbor’s deck and then spread to his own home.

“The fire was so intense that it spread inside the house,” Tasmim Aviv, 17, told the media.

Aviv and his parents escaped the home unharmed, but sadly Aviv was unable to save some of his pets.

“I was crying, ‘Let me go in and help my cat.'” [My parents] “I said, ‘No, don’t go back inside,'” he recalled.

“There’s nothing left there. Everything was lost in the fire.”

FDNY officials believe the explosion and subsequent flames started from a propane tank, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
