World Boxing Organisation (WBO) officials say they had warned the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in advance that at least one of the two controversial boxers dominating the female competitors in Paris had failed a gender test.
Hungarian Istvan Kovács, WBO’s European vice-president and former secretary-general of the International Boxing Association, told media in his country that the IOC had been informed in 2022 that Algerian boxer Imane Kherif had failed a gender test and was male in terms of his organisation.
According to Russia’s TASS news agency, International Boxing Association (IBA) president Umar Kremlev explained the organisation’s decision to strip Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting and Algeria’s Imane Kherif of eligibility to compete in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2023. “Based on DNA tests, it became clear that several athletes had tried to deceive their colleagues by posing as women. The tests proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes have been excluded from competition,” Kremlev said. Said.
“The issue was not with Kherif’s testosterone levels, which can now be adjusted, but with the results of the sex test which clearly showed that the Algerian boxer is biologically male,” Kovács said. Said HungarianHe noted that five boxers had been tested and all, including Mr Khelif, “were indeed male”.
In fact, Kovac said he reported the test results to the IOC himself, adding that Olympic officials ignored him, “but what’s unbelievable is that to this day they have not responded.”
The official also said he had urged Hungarian athlete Anna-Luka Hamori not to compete against Helib as he felt she did not have the proper training to compete against a human.
“The biggest problem is that for Hamori to achieve her big dream of winning a medal at a summer games in her first Olympic Games, she will have to beat the men, and she was not trained for that,” Kovac told media.
