J.D. Martinez ‘not thrilled’ with Mets’ one-day stop in St. Louis during taxing road trip

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Instead of spending their offseason with the Rockies, the Mets will be reuniting with Archie.

Because of this schedule, the Mets will play a make-up game in St. Louis on Monday before traveling to Colorado the next day to begin a new series.

They lost 3-2 to the Angels on Sunday and left the West Coast with their first series loss since June.

Monday’s make-up game was scheduled for May when the final game of a three-game series at Busch Stadium was postponed due to weather, specifically the threat of tornadoes in the area.

But the Mets will play 10 games over 10 days in three different time zones, spanning roughly 8,000 miles.

The Mets finish the trip with three games in Colorado and three more in Seattle.

“I’m not excited. [the makeup game]”But at the end of the day, this is a business and they have to make money,” JD Martinez said.

Martinez said postponed games that can’t be made up as part of a doubleheader or during a team’s next scheduled visit would be better played until the end of the season and only if necessary.

Martinez, 36, suggested he was somewhat concerned about the strain the extra travel would put on his body.

“It’s not going to be easy to go back and forth, it’s going to be hard,” Martinez said.

The Cardinals played at home against the Cubs on Sunday night.

First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 5:15 pm ET.

Tuesday’s scheduled starter, Luis Severino, was excused for the trip to St. Louis.

The right-hander was scheduled to fly from Southern California to Denver after Sunday’s game.

Mendoza said Reid Garrett and Sean Reid-Foley could return to the Mets’ relief corps this week.

Both pitchers struggled in rehab appearances for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday.

Starling Marte was base running and is scheduled to resume his rehab efforts on Monday in Port St. Lucie.

The veteran outfielder said recently that he plans to start playing minor league games this week, but Mendoza said only that it’s “probable” that Marte could make such a move within that time frame.

Marte has been on the injured list since June 25 with a bone contusion in his right knee.
