Musk's X to close its San Francisco office: reports

Social media site X is closing its San Francisco office and relocating employees to other locations in the Bay Area, the company announced internally on Monday. According to the New York Times:.

CEO Linda Yaccarino said in the memo that employees would be moved to the company’s Palo Alto and San Jose offices, which already house staff from xAI, another company owned by Elon Musk.

“This is an important decision that will impact many of you, but it is the right decision for our company in the long term,” Yaccarino wrote.

Musk previously promised to move his company’s headquarters to Texas in response to a California law that bans teachers from forcing students to reveal their gender identity. SpaceX, also owned by Musk, announced last month that it would move its California headquarters to Texas.

X, formerly Twitter, has been headquartered in San Francisco since it was founded in 2006. Musk acquired the company in 2022 and renamed it.

The headquarters building itself has been in the spotlight since Musk took over Company X after reports emerged that the company had fallen behind on rent payments and was trying to turn vacant office space into temporary housing for employees traveling for work.

Last year, the company installed a large illuminated “X” sign on its roof, sparking a clash with city officials after neighbors likened it to a bright strobe light.
