Paul Hudson wins House GOP primary in Michigan’s ultimate swing district

Paul Hudson won the Republican primary for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, one of the most contested races in the nation.

At the time the Associated Press covered the race, Hudson was leading Michael Markey Jr. by about 55% to 45%.

Markey Jr., who has touted his business experience throughout his campaign, has positioned himself as a “disruptor” who would work to “get things done” if elected to Congress.

Four states hold key primary elections on Tuesday, setting the stage for November’s Senate and House showdowns.

“I think, ‘So, why are we using something that is causing me chaos?’ [My team is] “For example, they say, ‘Mike, you started your first business at 14, you started in real estate before you were 15, you started a finance company during the worst economic crisis we’re probably going to see in our lifetimes,'” he told ABC News 13 in an interview earlier this month. “They say, ‘So you’re a disruptor. You go against the flow and get things done.’

Hudson, a lawyer, ran on a platform of stability, arguing that voters in his district are “uneasy” with the current political climate and promising “common sense in turbulent times.”

“When I talk to my constituents, I get the sense that they’re very anxious about the state of the country right now and there’s a strong sense that the country is heading in the wrong direction,” Hudson told ABC News 13.

Hudson will face off against incumbent Democratic Rep. Hillary Scholten in the November general election.

Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, which covers the entire city of Grand Rapids and much of the surrounding area, is seen as one of the largest battleground districts in the country after the state’s 2022 redistricting process made its boundaries more competitive.

Scholten, who is in his first term, is successfully poised to take the district from former Republican Rep. Peter Meyer in 2022. The district is classified as a “likely winnable” district for Democrats in this year’s election, according to a Cook Political report.
