Senator J.D. Vance (Ohio), a Marine veteran and Republican vice presidential nominee, accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D-Minn.) of lying about his military service and claiming to have owned a gun “during the war.”
At the press conference, Vance was asked about Waltz’s suggestion that because he earned a law degree from Yale and grew up in Silicon Valley, he belongs to an elite group.
Vance initially responded that he came from a poor family and worked while going to college and law school.
“The fact that Tim Waltz is trying to turn that into something evil, the fact that I actually worked through college and law school and accomplished something for myself, to me that’s the American Dream, and I think that for Tim Waltz to want to denigrate that is pretty weird, frankly,” Vance began.
He further noted that Waltz, a retired Army National Guard sergeant major, not only retired from the Army before his unit deployed to Iraq, but also lied about his military service by claiming to have carried a weapon “in war” when he never served in combat or war.
“What really bothers me about Tim Walz isn’t the positions he’s taken, although he is certainly a far-left extremist,” Vance said.
He explained:
“When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did. I followed their call and served honorably, and I am very proud of that service. When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, what do you think he did? He quit the military and let his troops go without him. This was roundly condemned by many who served with him. I think it’s shameful to get your troops ready to go to Iraq, promise to follow through on your promise, and then quit just before you have to go.
J.D. Vance hit back at Tim Waltz for mocking him for attending Yale.
“What bothers me about Tim Waltz is this stupid phrase, stolen courage. Stop pretending to be something you’re not. If he wants to criticize me for having an Ivy League education, I’m proud of it. […] I was able to… pic.twitter.com/0qt3waifq2

Vance then referred to a video clip posted by the Harris-Waltz campaign in which Waltz claims to have “used” weapons “in war” but has never actually been in combat.
Governor Tim WaltzI was in the Army for 25 years and I hunt. I’ve voted for common sense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks. We can study the impact of gun violence. We can do war weapons. pic.twitter.com/3IVaXi2RP2

“He was talking about gun control, saying weapons that ‘I used in my war’ should not be left lying around on American streets,” Vance said.
“Tim Waltz, when was the last time you served in a war? When was this? You abandoned your unit right before going to Iraq, and what weapons did you bring to that war? He never spent a day in a combat zone,” Vance said.
“What bothers me about Tim Waltz is this bullshit about stolen fame,” he said. “Don’t pretend to be something you’re not. And if he wants to criticize me for having an Ivy League education, I’m proud that my mother supported me and that I was able to make something of myself.”
“If I were him, I would be ashamed to have lied about my military experience like he did,” he said.
