DOJ contends Hunter Biden was hired by Romanian oligarch to ‘influence US policy:’ docs

In new documents, Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors allege that Hunter Biden was paid by a Romanian oligarch to “influence U.S. policy and public opinion” while his father, Joe Biden, was vice president.

The filing was made Wednesday by Special Counsel David Weiss of the Central District of California in connection with Hunter Biden’s tax trial in California.

The allegations are the closest prosecutors have come to linking President Biden to his son’s overseas business dealings.

Romanian businessman Gabriel Popoviciu is expected to testify against Hunter Biden at his trial in Los Angeles, which begins on September 5. In the filing, Weiss noted that Hunter Biden “entered into an oral agreement” in 2015 to help Popoviciu fight bribery charges in Romania.

At the trial, the prosecution stated that it would “present the above evidence.” [Hunter Biden] Business Associate 1 received payments from foreign principals who sought to influence U.S. policy and public opinion and to have the U.S. investigate the Romania investigation. [Popoviciu] In Romania.”

In the documents, Weiss alleges that Hunter Biden and his business partners “were concerned about the potential political influence of their lobbying activities.” [Hunter Biden’s] father [Joe Biden]”

Wednesday’s filing marks the first time that Hunter Biden’s international business ties have been detailed in greater detail.

“Business Associate 1 and [Popoviciu] A “Management Services Agreement” was signed purporting that Business Associate 1’s entity would provide management services to real estate properties in Romania, when in fact this was not the case. [Popoviciu] “Payment was made,” the document states.

In the filing, Weiss acknowledged that Hunter Biden’s lawyers had asked the court to dismiss allegations that Hunter Biden may have violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

“The government does not intend to address allegations that defendants violated FARA or improperly coordinated with the Obama Administration,” Weiss wrote. “However, […] The government plans to present evidence that Business Associate 1 structured business relationships to avoid registration as a foreign agent, and that defendants and their business partners had access to government officials, particularly the U.S. Department of State.”

Prosecutors allege Hunter Biden and two business associates split more than $3 million in payments from Popoviciu between November 2015 and 2017.

Hunter Biden is accused of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes and filing false tax returns between 2016 and 2019. He allegedly used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle, spending millions on drugs, escorts, luxury cars and other expensive items. He has since paid the taxes.

He is charged with three felonies and six misdemeanors. Tax litigation.

A pretrial hearing in the case is scheduled for August 21 in Los Angeles.

In June, Hunter Biden was convicted by a federal jury in Delaware of lying about his illegal drug use while filling out paperwork to purchase a gun. A verdict has yet to be reached in the case.
