An illegal immigrant who was released into the United States nearly a decade ago is now facing charges of sexually assaulting a child in Rhode Island.
The 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Guatemala first arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border under the jurisdiction of former President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in August 2016 and was arrested near Antelope Wells, New Mexico.
Following their arrest, the Department of Homeland Security issued the illegal immigrants a Notice to Appear (NTA) to appear before a federal immigration judge at a later date.
In February 2022, Providence Police arrested the illegal immigrant on suspicion of first-degree child sexual abuse. Two years later, in July of this year, the Providence Superior Court issued an arrest warrant for the illegal immigrant, and the illegal immigrant turned himself in to the police on the same day.
The illegal immigrant was also allowed to post bail on the same day he appeared in court.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained the illegal immigrant on July 22. He remains in ICE custody pending adjudication on the child sexual assault case and subsequent deportation.
“This Guatemalan alien will be tried in court, but he has been accused of serious and disturbing crimes,” ICE official Todd Lyons said in a statement. “We have a duty to the children in our communities to apprehend foreign national sex offenders and remove them from our neighborhoods.”
