The Butler County, Pennsylvania, coroner on Thursday released the cause and manner of death of Corey Comperatore, a husband and father who was shot and killed during the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Comperatore, 50, a former fire chief for the Butler Township Fire Department, was killed while trying to protect his wife and daughters from gunfire at a gathering in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The coroner’s office told Fox News Digital the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was homicide.
Following Comperatore’s funeral on July 19, friends and neighbors described the volunteer fire chief as a “wonderful man,” a “good father” and a loving husband.

Comperatore for 10 years United States Army Reserve, according to his obituary.
“Above all, Corey was the quintessential family man and the best father,” the obituary read. “His love for his wife, Helen Comperatore, was a testament to the power of partnership and commitment. Together they raised two daughters, Allison and Kaylee Comperatore, who will inherit his caring spirit.”

A week after the assassination attempt, President Trump paid tribute to the fallen firefighter at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, displaying Comperatore’s fire jacket and helmet onstage.
“He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect people from flying bullets… He was a truly honorable man,” Trump said in his speech. Republican National Convention Speech“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for another.”

Two men were seriously injured in the assassination attempt on President Trump, David “Jake” Duch and James Copenhaver, who have since been released from the hospital and are recovering from their gunshot wounds.
